What Parks Mean To Me

Riff-on-this
9/18/09 was the annual Park(ing) Day here in San Francisco (www.parkingday.org), so we went on down to Valencia St. in the Mission to visit some of the amazing pop-up parks and ask the people a very relative question: "Why are parks and open spaces important?" Feel free to add your answer!

It’s where I run and shout and kick my balls, read a book by waterfalls. When the city takes its toll, I escape to the grassy knoll.

They are free open spaces for all people to use. Whether you just want to sit around and drink with friends, get some serious exercise, meet someone for a date or feel a little closer to nature, parks are there for you to use them how you please!

Nature, and by that I mean the unguided (by any intelligence) development of complex systems such as physical forces, chemical interactions, or biological evolution, create more beauty in complexity than any single mind or generation of minds could even hope to design. A single mind or even the sum of a generations collective intelligence cannot compete with eleven billion years of random interactions that led to the successful evolution of the human brain. In short a tree is more beautiful and mysterious than a poem and a forest more poignant than all of human literature.

Open space connects us to what the earth and its inherent qualities are. It shows us what we have done thru sculpting, building, carving, extracting and what it could have been if untouched. Parks are important for relief, contemplations, fun, and memories. Irreplaceable.

Open space and parks mean places where people can gather and gossip and connect and put their ideas into the communal “make the world better” brain trust.

Parks and open spaces turn streets and cities into actual communities by providing a place to meet others, gather, relax, reduce stress, play games, play with our pets, etc. Open space brings people together and adds beauty to our surroundings.

Parks mean quiet times, greenery, drinking wine under the stars or beer in the sunshine, swings and seesaws and monkey bars, loved ones coming together, picnics, the tickle of grass between your toes.
